We made it back into Crust Pizza tonight for the first time in too long. We have a tendency to try to stop in wherever it may be convenient at the time rather than drive somewhere just to eat, and as we were out snapping photos of all the gorgeous fall colors, we ended our day at Crust Pizza Company in Panther Creek.
To our delight we were greeted by one of the owners we hadn’t met previously, Clint Price, who let us know that since we last stopped in, they’ve made a few menu additions as well as some accomodation improvements.
Crust has recently added Tomato Basil soup to the menu, and Clint tells us over the next few weeks they’ll be adding several more soups; enough to rotate them through on a “Soup of the Day” list. They have also removed the Blue Bell ice cream, and have replaced it with a variety of Gelato Italia’s gelatos. Finally, in an effort to capitalize on as much seating capacity as possible, they have just integrated some new gas radient heaters above the patio, to keep diners comfortable when dining outdoors on cooler days and evenings.
For our pizza tonight, we stuck with one of our favorites, the “Carl’s King,” Crust’s take on what many would call a “Supreme” – topped with pepperoni, sausage, Canadian bacon, fresh mushrooms, red onions, red, yellow and green peppers and black olives. We did replace the mushrooms with pineapple, though. Once again, nearly everything about this pizza was perfect. We also enjoyed some of those infamous garlic knots.
About halfway through our pizza, Clint brought over a bowl of that Tomato Basil soup to try (lest you think that every bowl comes with a full sprig of Basil floating in it – we’re pretty sure that yours won’t but, don’t be surprised if it does). The flavor and consistency is right up there in the top of it’s class among Tomato Basil’s – think Pallotta’s or La Madeline’s. Good for your soul (but maybe not so much your cholesterol level). That’s the tricky thing about Tomato Basil soup, you think, “tomatoes… basil… totally healthy!” You forget there’s also cream and butter; En masse.
After all those wonderful garlic knots, warm and hearty soup and delicious pizza, we had nary any space left for dessert. But for the sake of trying their new addition, we did share a small cup of two flavors of the gelato – dark chocolate and toffee crunch. Did you know that gelato is actually a great palate cleanser? Sweet, but not overly so, rich and creamy, but not heavy. And as an added bonus, contains only about 4% to 8% butterfat, resulting in a treat that has roughly half the calories and fat of regular American ice cream.
Crust had the area heaters on the patio fired up which we noted to be pleasently cozy to be under as we exited our favorite pizzeria. If you haven’t made it out to Crust Pizza yet, you really don’t know what you’re missing. And if you have been by lately, consider trying some of their new tomato basil soup and or gelato.
