health department reports for restaurants in the woodlands

About once each week TheWoodlandsEats updates it’s monthly summary of reports on area restaurant inspections by the Montgomery County Health Department Environmental Health Services. The department routinely performs food establishment inspections twice per year, or more often if the inspection report resulted in numerous demerits or a complaint was filed. We have listed those Woodlands area restaurants that recieved no demerits, and those that received the most demerits.

But where do the demerits come from? Many are self-explanatory; such as “evidence of insect infestation” or “cross-contamination of raw products.” Then there are those that are a little less self-explanatory, such as “inadequate handwashing facilities” – what does that mean? Isn’t a sink with water and soap good enough? Well, no, actually. It must be a separate and easily accessible sink, with it’s own water supply, soap and towels. Or how about “unapproved HACCP plans?” That one’s even more in-depth; an HACCP Plan is a Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points Plan, or a systematic preventive approach to food safety that addresses physical, chemical, and biological hazards as a means of prevention rather than finished product inspection. HACCP is used in the food industry to identify potential food safety hazards, so that key actions can be taken to reduce or eliminate the risk of the hazards being realized. The system is used at all stages of food production and preparation processes including packaging, handling and distribution.

With all of that in mind, here are the results for this month:
